PyroPhobic Systems and partners win the SPE Automotive Innovation Safety Award
The win recognizes PyroPhobic Systems’ LithiumPrevent 200
BARRIE, ON, November 23, 2023 – PyroPhobic Systems (PyroPhobic), Molded Precision Components, and Auto-Kabel Group have won the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Automotive Innovation Award in the safety category for LithiumPrevent 200 intumescent terminal covers. The innovative material and design support the mitigation of thermal runaway caused by electrical arcing in high-voltage electric vehicle (EV) batteries, which ensures a safer drive for motorists.

LithiumPrevent 200 has unique properties that allow it to act as both a fire barrier and an electrical insulator. For this application, the automotive manufacturer required a material capable of being produced in three-dimensional shapes at high production volume combined with the ability to withstand thermal runaway conditions while providing electrical insulation. In its first-ever use in EV battery pack production, LithiumPrevent 200 is injection molded to create terminal covers and separators that mitigate electrical arcing, a failure mode that can cause thermal runaway.
